It's In the Details

My interest in symbology arose while I was writing my Master's thesis on the topic "Fashion and the Occult: Esoteric and Mind-control Symbolism in Contemporary High Fashion". I got so into it that I would stay in front of the computer till the early hours of the morning. As an amateur tarot reader and once a reiki enthusiast, I believe in a symbol's power on the subconsciousness and I am also fascinated by the historical and purely aesthetic value of religious and other symbols. Therefore you would rarely see me wearing a piece of jewelry that has no life or meaning. The only exception I would make make is wear pearl earrings every now and then. As I wrote earlier, whenever I feel my outfit is too boring or impersonal, I would probably add a piece like the ones below. The details have to tell a story, to tell something more about me - my history, my interests or beliefs. And... here come the bullet points! :)

  • The deer necklace tells about my love for the forest. I am born and raised in the so-called Wild Forest county in Bulgaria (Ludogorie) and I couldn't imagine my life not being close to the woods. Besides, I think that the deer is the most beautiful animal and it symbolises intuition, gentleness, wisdom and the ability to move through life's obstacles with grace.

  • The cicada is a sun-lover and the sun is associated with illumination and self-expression. As Avia writes here, it is about "what gets us all fired up, and motivates our energy". Because of its naturalistic design, I use the cicada necklace to add an edge to my look once it starts to feel a bit too girly. It matches perfectly with a lace dress for example.

  • The world necklace with the binoculars is self-explanatory - I love to travel!

  • The flower is probably the first jewel piece that I bought - it is around fifteen years old. I still think it is beautiful!

  • The apple - the forbidden fruit. I particularly love this one - it matches almost any outfit of mine, and adds a solid touch of playfulness to the look. It is still available on Mygift.bg - one of my favorite shops online, which often has pieces that are hand-made in Bulgaria.

  • The spiral - the movement that is in the beginning of everything, but also symbolizes the path from the outer world inwards as well as the other way around - connectivity with the cosmic and the divine. I bought this ring from a stand at Sozopol beach.

Above all, these necklaces serve to remind me not to take myself too seriously, to stay in touch with my inner child, and to keep a creative and playful outlook - something that I very often forget.
